There are different types of games, each with its own rules and varying ante and betting intervals. Some games are played with fixed limits, meaning that the maximum bet is limited to a certain amount. This is common in pot-limit contests, where players can bet or raise the pot. The amount of the bet is usually limited to a few dollars or more. In stud games, the limit is generally twice as high in the final betting interval.

In other variants, there are no betting intervals, but the ante is a small bet that is required to play the game. The ante is typically a dollar or $5. The ante may be small enough to be ignored, but the player must bet the minimum to participate in the game. This is a simple way to determine the minimum ante, which is usually a small bet.

In a draw game, the ante is a smaller bet that must be made in the initial betting interval. The player with the best five-card hand wins the pot.
